Ink Layering

Hello friends.  Last week Jennifer McGuire had an amazing video on Ink Layering that I finally had a chance to try out yesterday.  I love to learn new technique's, but I'm not always so good at following directions!  Well, maybe it's not the following directions part so much as trying to be clever and add a little something extra in...sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't!!  My first try didn't work!!

When you look at this card, it's not a bad card, but it doesn't show the ink layering that Jennifer taught in her video.  Why??  Because I tried adding in an extra element...the background script.  My second try came out much better:

Can you see the leaves in the background now?  I definitely stamped the leaves in white on the first card too, but because of the script, and also the lighter color stripes I think, you couldn't see them.  Leaving off the script background, and using brighter and bolder colors made the leaves pop out!  I used the leaf stamp from PTI's Songbirds stamp set, and stamped them with Hero Arts Unicorn Pigment Ink.  I used one of the stripes from my NBUS Plaid Builder (PTI) and stamped over the white leaves with Daffodil Delight, Old Olive, and Rich Razzleberry inks.

I'd like to insert here a very BIG THANK YOU to Darnell for having her NBUS challenges!!  Without you Darnell, my pile of unused rubber would be growing out of control.  I still have enough that I could probably fill one of your whole challenges all by myself, but I don't want to be greedy and take over.  Just PLEASE keep having these challenges so I can get to some of this stuff!! :0)  Like the Plaid Builders set that I HAD to have...can't even remember how long I've had it now and have yet to build a plaid background with it!  But it did make amazing stripes, so it's all good! :0)  And who knows, maybe someday it will actually get used to make a plaid background...miracles do happen ya know!! :0)

If you've got some time, grab a cup of joe or a diet Coke, and head on over to Darnell's blog and check out some of the amazing cards in the gallery...you won't be disappointed!!

Thanks so much for stopping by today...I love it when you do! :0)

  1. What a difference from the first card to the second. The leaves definitely show up better but both cards are lovely! Oh Marcia my friend, your post made me laugh. Even if your plaid builder set never builds a plaid, it still makes for beautiful stripes. ;0)

  2. Oh Marcia, we are birds of a feather! I "have to have" things that I've seen and then don't use. Then I try a technique I've seen and I always manage to add or leave something out and wonder why mine doesn't look like the sample! I saw that video by Jennifer and I haven't tried it yet but your colorful card came out lovely. I love the technique and will be trying it. Using your advice I will only do what I'm told when I try it! Your first card is really pretty and the script shows up well. It looks like that was your intention and it worked.

  4. Both cards are beautiful. Isn't that a great technique. It certainly works better with the bold colors. I know what you mean, you want to create something a little different so we do something that doesn't really work for the technique. Does that make sense??? Anyway, great take on the technique.

  5. Yes, yes, we have all been there, and we feel your pain! However we are right there with you feeling your "AHA" moment when it works like it is suppose to (and we simply follow the directions! * wink!!)...remember my blooper on the camouflage pocket card?...follow directions!! Beautiful card and YES the leaves look magnificent in white on the bold stripes!!

  6. This card is amazing. Your first card is quite pretty, but Ican definitely see the white ink better on the second. So beautiful and dramatic. I am looking forward to trying this technique myself. And, I totally agree with you on Darnell's challenge--love it and how it forces me to use and not just shop.

  8. I like both cards...but that second one really does pop! Great job with this technique...and must check out the link. I follow Jennifer McGuire but don't always remember to look at every post...I missed this great technique...so thank you for sharing.

  9. Oh, so much to say! First of all, thank you for your first entry, too. That card and both of these are terrific!

I do have to agree with you on the whole "following directions" bit and I had a big chuckle seeing how we aren't alone with our renegade behavior - and where it gets us! Technique aside, your stripes are stunning! I love plaid, but I also love stripes so either one works for me.

Having said that, however, how do you feel about me challenging you to use that set and make a plaid design? Hmmm? Well, that's what I'm doing! Just please email me and let me know when you do since I might miss it and I don't want to miss it!!

Finally, wow, you had me blushing! I'm so delighted with your enthusiasm and support of my NBUS Challenge and I appreciate that you played along! I also appreciate that you understand and forgive me for being so terribly late in getting here to comment! Mwah!! Hugs, Darnell
