CAS Watercolour August 2017 - SALT

Hello friends.  Made my first Christmas card this Summer (gasp!!  I need to get crackin'...December will be here before I know it!!) for the latest challenge over at CAS Watercolour.  This month the challenge is all about SALT!

I've tried using salt once before without any success, and tried it again for this challenge with a big, fat FAIL!!

I used some blues and purples from my Kuretake Gansai Tambi water colors and coarse sea salt, and nothing happened!  At least nothing that resembled what the DT was showing on their cards!  Grrrrr!!  OK, guess it's time to watch the videos to see what I'm doing wrong!!  After watching a few of them, I think I may not have used enough water, and also, I used the textured side of a piece of TH water color paper.  For my next try, I used more water and a smooth heavyweight cardstock, and came up with this:

I used a combination of coarse sea salt and regular table salt and actually got some crystal like design on my cardstock this time...yeah!!  The purple shows up a lot better IRL too, and I actually really like the way this card turned out!  I cut my water colored piece in half (so I have enough for another card!) and also cut a die cut snowflake (Memory Box) in half, and used half on the water colored piece and the other half on the card base.  I used a piece of craft foam under my water colored layer to pop it up for some dimension, and then finished with a embossed sentiment from Neat and Tangled's Bright Baubles and a few iridescent jewels from Lucy's Little Things.  Once the water colored panel was done, the rest of the card came together really quickly!

I watercolored, die cut, stamped and embossed for this challenge.

LOTS of time to play along with this months challenge, and also lots of GEORGOUS inspiration from the DT to get you inspired, so check out the fun right HERE and play along!

Thanks so much for stopping by today...I love it when you do!!

Beautiful card, Marcia. Love both of the backgrounds that you made. So I wouldn't call the first one a fail.... It still is beautiful.

I can see the crystals in the first piece, Marcia! And the second piece with the snowflake is gorgeous! Love the cards design! Thanks so much for sharing with us at CAS Watercolour! I'm glad you didn't give up!

AMAZING, Marcia. Your first piece is so pretty ... what gorgeous colours. You need to use it! So glad you tried a second time and are happy with the results. You should be ... it's a beautiful, artsy design. Thanks so much for sharing with us at CAS Watercolour! xx

Your 2nd watercoloured salted background turned out beautifully, Marcia. You are right...the amount of water really makes a difference. After you do your watercolour wash and add your salt you can spritz with water again and get even more reaction from your salt. This is a technique that really grows on you, I think. So glad you played along with us at CAS Watercolour. Hugs

I agree with Bonnie and Loll...your 1st piece is beautiful too and could certainly be used on another card. Hugs

Oh it's beautiful! I'm glad you didn't give up on that technique... I always use ordinary CS and you can't wet that too much, but your card is really wonderful! Many thanks for playing along at CAS Watercolour!

You certainly nailed the crystals on the second piece although I love the subtle effect on the fist.
Marcia you are right, I threw out quite a few of mine, not enough water, not the right paper, not the right watercolour. I should have tracked it like an experiment.
love your layout and the black sentiment banner is perfect :)
